Route notes: the Aburi ridge

Twelve kilometres along the Akuapem hills with Accra laid out below. Our most-requested hike, and how to walk it well.

Forty minutes north of the city, the land rises sharply into the Akuapem ridge. The air is cooler by four or five degrees and, on a clear morning, you can see the whole sprawl of Accra down to the sea.

The route

We start just above the Botanical Gardens and follow forest paths and farm tracks north along the ridge, through two villages, before looping back via the old road. Around 12km, 450m of climbing, four to five hours at a relaxed pace.

The best view of Accra is from forty kilometres away.

When to go

November to February, when the rains have stopped and before the Harmattan haze thickens. Leave the city by 5am to be climbing at sunrise.
